Minimum Computer Specifications
For 2008-2009 Incoming Students
We recommend you take advantage of the G2GMobile@VCU laptop program. When you purchase a laptop through this program, you will receive a computer that meets all of the requirements for most programs on campus. These laptops come with all VCU-required software (some additional software may be required for some programs, usually after your freshman year), plus a 4-year on-campus warranty that covers any accidental damage you may inflict on your computer. Most repairs can be handled while you wait or within 24 hours, and if a repair will take longer, we will give you a loaner to use while you wait for your computer (as long as loaners are available. The specifications listed on this page are general minimum specs for most students at VCU. There are some programs that do require more specialized computers, or may require additional peripherals. Links to those programs are listed here. If your programs is not listed, then you can follow the general specifications listed below.
Additionally, there are some additional things you should consider before you buy an new computer. We recommend you read our FAQ page, but if you don't have the patience to do that, then at least read the answers to these frequently asked questions:

Additional Recommendations
- Systems should meet or exceed the published specifications. Check with your program to make sure your specific program does not have different recommendations. See above for more details.
- Anti-Virus and Malware protection is required and available at no cost from VCU.
- Off-campus network access may also require a 56K modem or WAN card.
- An Ethernet cable is required to access the on-campus hard-wired network. 25’ is recommended.
Specific Recommendation for Students Purchasing Laptops
- Accidental damage coverage is very strongly advised.
- Security lock cable is recommended for portable computers. These are universal for all laptop computers.
- Portables are additionally advised to have Bluetooth, and a high capacity battery.
- A theft recovery software subscription such as ‘LoJack for Laptops’ is encouraged.
